I value Mike Holmes book, and am glad I have it. I have not seen him on TV, the book looked interesting, and has proved its worth. Also, since I am from a colder climate (Chicago) I appreciate his understanding of what we go through, unlike many books and magazines published out of California. My climate is cold and wet, while Mike's Canadian climate is cold and dry (as explained by the folks of Mighty House radio, Ron and Rich Cowgill, on WCPT in my area -- see their radio show recorded via UStream on YouTube.com), and therefore readers from Chicago and California need to make adjustments, though Mike tries to do so, too.Main points:Learn as much as you can about home renovation before you hire a contractor (this is not a DIY book, but it informs DIY somewhat).Interview and follow up on references of many more than three contractors to get the right one, note the difference between design, design-build and build.Get a permit whenever required, and make sure you meet with the inspector at all required meetings, and follow the rules. This gives you minimum acceptable quality and you may want to exceed this quality, which you can with numerous examples from this book.Use the best materials and methods for the job, of which this book has many useful suggestions. Mike (helpfully) ranks the suitability of alternative materials for various jobs.Seek out and expect quality, which includes good finishes, the right underlayment, and long lasting low-maintenance renovations.I cannot say how "green" Mike Holmes is. His book did not strike me as pro- or anti- or pseudo / washed- green. Though, the integrity of this author seems strong.
