This novel explores the emotional effects of war on an American medic and Jewish nurse during and in the aftermath of WWII. The WWII era is heavily saturated in Christian fiction, but the perspectives of a St Louis ship survivor and a war get with PTSD help to make the plot quite unique. Make no mistake, this is a difficult and heavy read, especially during the first two thirds of the novel. A bit more humor and whit from the supporting characters or even the dog may have helped but probably wouldn't have been authentic. I was glad for the ending which wasn't what I had expected at the beginning but which was very satisfying. This was an excellent read but is probably too emotionally draining to read again. Still it was a beautiful tribute to everyone who loves and supports those with PTSD or those who are haunted by horrors they can't forget.
