Our "puppy" named Bailey is 2 years old now and I wish my son and our family had this book when we first brought her home. This is more than just an easy and fun read for kids. It has cute and simple illustrations, but it also teaches basic need-to-know principles on caring for a pet, and has helpful reminders of how a puppy no doubt feels in a new environment, with new people, and new surroundings to explore. We are still learning how to take good care of our dog, and I'm glad I found this book to remind my kids of their responsibility. I think this is a perfect companion gift for children who get a new puppy. It would be great to have the kids read it before the puppy gets to the house for the first time. My son is 10 years old, and read the book the day it came. I asked him about it to test his learning. He said he liked it, and learned a few new things. I plan to use it as a teaching tool when he's, "too tired to take care of the dog", and to remind us all of our responsibilities to care for our dog. Looks like there will be a book 2, so I will keep my eye out for that one as well.
