Description

Paradise, Idaho, may not be the largest town, but for newly minted professor Zoe Santangelo, it’s the first step on the path to her big break. After teaching in a small Idaho school, her next stop is the Ivy League, and no one is going to stand in her way. She’ll do what it takes to move up, to protect her students from a creepy campus stalker―and to protect her heart from Cal Jackson, the hot, hunky cowboy who keeps coming to her rescue. After a career-ending injury, Cal has left professional football behind and come home to work the family farm. He’s determined not to get mixed up with any more city girls who don’t want to settle down with a country boy. But after he rescues sassy geologist Zoe from a snowy ditch, he can’t stop thinking about her. Can Cal keep Zoe safe from whoever is targeting her―and can he show her that having ambition doesn’t mean she has to sacrifice love?

One sexy, career-injured NFL quarterback-turned-farmer and one fashion-confuses-me phD professor of hydrogeology meet in a ditch on a snowy road in Idaho – and the fun begins.Cal is not only an alpha male with a great body (not so good-looking though) but he’s been through some life challenges and come through a wiser person with a kick-ass sense of humor. His big career is over. Zoe is just starting her career away from family and friends in Cal’s home town where his roots go way back.I enjoyed the culture shocks for a California smart girl moving to a snowy Idaho farming and college town to begin her career. Zoe starts out very cautious about strangers but everyone acts like small towns are perfectly safe. Turns out that’s not quite true. And sweet Zoe turns out to have the heart of a mama bear when one of her students is threatened. That brings the wrath of the bad guy down on her.I liked this story because I just love how Rosalind James makes characters and places feel real. And the people talk and tease and love. I have never read another author who brings humor into her stories like this. The people aren’t just real, they’re smart and they pay attention and they care about the people around them. And I think they must be that way because the author is. The subjects of college campus safety and career aspirations are merged into he story. The career stuff results in a terrific speech that Zoe makes as well as relationship difficulties with Cal.I did wish I knew what kind of farming Cal did and how on earth he manages all of it apparently on his own. I live in a farm town right now myself, so I was trying to imagine. It’s Idaho, so does he grow potatoes? :)This wasn’t my favorite Rosalind James book. I don’t need the suspense part to enjoy her stories. It’s still a great read and I look forward to others in the series.
