Description

When Papa comes home tonight, dear child, (I promise - not too late) you'll hear me whistling up the road. You'll meet me at the gate. It can be hard waiting for Papa to come home, but it'll be worth it because you'll both have so much fun when he does! From singing songs and making dinner to playing all the way until bedtime, just hanging with Papa is one of the most joyous ways to end the day. Eileen Spinelli's highly anticipated follow-up to the bestselling When Mama Comes Home Tonight, complete with gorgeous illustrations from David McPhail, is a soothing celebrtion of simple moments shared between parent and child.

After picking up the Mama counterpart to this book, it made sense to pick this book up as part of my daughter's bedtime routine. Like the Mama book, it's well written and illustrated and engages my daughter's attention. My only gripe with this book is the way that Papa is portrayed when compared to the Mama book. Mama comes home from work and plays with the child. Papa comes home (not from work) and he cooks and cleans. I know that we live in a more equal society, but it doesn't seem equal to portray men and women completely differently. It's as if someone was upset about female inequality and decided to express years of internal strife in the form of a children's book. Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with dads cooking and cleaning. I do it all the time for my family. But why portray men and women so different within the family construct if we are truly equal? Good book. My daughter loves it. A good buy.
