Description

This is the debut album from 27-year-old Pyeng Threadgill, whose father is free jazz saxophonist Henry Threadgill and mother is a founder of the Urban Bushwomen. On this CD, Pyeng performs the songs of blues legend Robert Johnson, presenting new arrangements that combine the old and new: "Love in Vain" is done with a reggae back-beat, "Sweet Home Chicago" has a New Orleans marching band ambience, while pop, hip hop, jazz and latin monotonous find their way into other songs. Accompanied by trumpet, trombone, guitar, cello drums, piano and back up singers, all of her arrangements are compelling and original.

These songs have all been covered to death many times over but Pyeng Threadgill finds something new in each of them. The band is wonderful and gives a different feel to each song. Ms. Threadgill has a beautiful clear voice and it is easy to understand the lyrics; her phrasing makes them relevant (or as relevant as they can be) to the modern listener. I find them captivating. The only drawback is that the styles are all over the map; you don't get much of a feeling that these songs were interpreted by the same musicians at the same session.
