Lana Turner starred in some great movies. The Big Cube certainly was not one of them but that's one of the reasons this film is so much fun to watch. You can tell that Lana knew this wasn't a great movie and lets you in on the secret by letting go completely and going to great lengths to out-Lana even Lana herself with her portrayal of Adriana Roman.The psychedelic acid trips depicted in the movie will exceed even the most outlandish of the PSAs you saw in school growing up and these alone are worth the price of admission. Another review compares The Big Cube to Joan Crawford's last movie, Trog. I think a more apt comparison is Joan Crawford in Straight Jacket. Whereas Trog flounders endlessly and is mostly dull and unwatchable, Joan threw everything including the kitchen sink into Straight Jacket to create a completely over the top yet riveting character. Although Lana turns in a more restrained performance for The Big Cube, the similarities are undeniable as Lana runs through somewhat of a greatest hits of some of her most memorable characters all rolled into one for this movie.This was not a high-budget, major motion picture in its day and does not try to be anything but pure entertainment. On that level it exceeds with (pun intended) flying colors. Bad, when done very well, can be quite good and The Big Cube is one of those movies.
