CAPITOL Records' circa 1970 budget-priced LP of WALKIN' MY BABY BACK HOME (DF-504) is a shortened version of his 1963 DUOPHONIC sound album, TOP POPS (DT-1891) and the earlier mono-only red cover LP of the same name (T-1891). The oldest version was a 10" disc from 1952 entitled 8 TOP POPS (H-9110). This 10 song final release has a lime green label. CAPITOL's rarest, it was used by them for only a year or two.Original mono tracks that were so poorly rechanneled on the '60s DUOPHONIC set have undergone a less-disruptive reprocessing here. Most of the sound is slightly right of center mix to extreme right. Over headphones the left channel seems empty by comparison, but it does contain deepest bass tones and a faint added echo.In 1952, this LP's title song peaked at #8 on Billboard's pop chart. Also that year, "Somewhere Along the Way" reached the same position, "Faith Can Move Mountains" was #24, and "I'm Never Satisfied" topped out at #22.There's no surprises here; mostly straight romantic ballads lushly orchestrated. "Weaver of Dreams" briefly includes a mixed chorus. "Papa Loves Mambo" is the set's most energetic number. It closely approximates Perry Como's hit version. Midway through "If I Give My Love to You" there's a Tommy Dorsey-inspired trombone solo.SIDE ONE[2:49] Somewhere Along the Way[2:37] Walkin' My Baby Back Home[3:08] Faith Can Move Mountains[3:06] Hold My Hand[3:10] Teach Me TonightSIDE TWO[2:11] I'm Never Satisfied[3:08] Because You're Mine[2:43] A Weaver of Dreams[2:40] Papa Loves Mambo[2:58] If I Give My Heart to YouTOTAL TIME: 28:30
