Description

When Jim Croce died tragically in a plane crash on Sept. 20, 1973, he was just thirty years old and had recently been recognized as one of the most promising artists of his era. From only three original studio releases he earned two #1 singles, six more Top 40 singles and a #1 album. Home Recordings: Americana features the best of America’s roots songs, from country to blues, written by Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell, Jimmie Rodgers, Brownie McGhee and others, and recorded by Jim in his Pennsylvania home on a Wollensak recorder. Shared by his family for the first time, these are intimate, revealing songs made all the more emotional as a result of Jim’s life cut short. Home Recordings: Americana is the first album of unreleased material in 30 years and features liner notes written by wife Ingrid and son A.J. Croce.

The cover of this disc shows a diagram of the type of recorder used on these Jim Croce "Home Recordings", a basic reel to reel and microphone. Too many reviewers are complaining about the audio, meanwhile forgetting about the significance and history value of this rare recording. The audio is really not that bad, not as bad as say listening to Charlie Patton or Blind Lemon Jefferson old 78 recordings. The only real problem with this one is, it lacks Croce originals, there are none. Some songs on here are the blues and Croce does some fine acoustic work on here playing various blues riffs and notes, while you're listening to this recording try to imagine Jim Croce as an old blues singer, most of the best blues recordings are presented with vocal and guitar only. There are a few tracks of "country Jim" on here with the standards, Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried", Dave Dudley's "Six Days On The Road", Jimmie Rodgers' "In The Jailhouse Now", Freddy Hart's "The Wall", Lefty Frizzell's "Mom And Dad's Waltz". Listen for the fat woman song and Tommy Collins' "Pickles". Jim Croce's "Home Recordings;Americana" is exactly what the title says it is, nothing more, nothing less. Let's hope for more Jim Croce material to be released.
