One could be forgiven for listening to Harry Bodine and thinking that he is a life-long native of the Crescent City, but in fact, Bodine is based in Texas. Oh well. This is a great album of stripped-down, blues with a strong New Orleans flavor. Bodine isn't the flashiest guitarist around, but he is good enough, particularly with a slide. He switches back and forth between electric and acoustic (although the latter is primarily a resonator guitar), but even when he plays electric, the tone still sounds organic. None of that overly-clean, processed sound here. The backing band does its job without ever getting in the way. The album always maintains "space," kind of like on a Tab Benoit album. If you liked Anders Osborne's Which Way to Here, or Living Room, you can't go wrong with this album. I would also recommend that you track down the albums by Bodine's former band, Delta Roux, if you can.Further listening: Anders Osborne (of course), Tab Benoit, Paul Black and the Flip Kings, Delta Moon, Delta Roux (not the same bands), Russell Gulley, John Mooney, Tony Joe White.[...]
