British director Peter Chelsom followed his excellent film "Hear My Song" with this simply stunning comedy. And if you haven't seen Hear My Song featuring the late Ned Beatty as legendary Irish tenor Josef Locke, try to find a copy and check it out.Here, Jerry Lewis plays Oliver Platt's father. The father has "funny bones"; the son, not so much. Oliver Platt is terrific here. On more than one occasion, Mr. Platt has played lawyers on TV as well as in films. You may recall that he was particularly good as White House counsel in the TV series West Wing, featuring Martin Sheen.Here, the late, great Jerry Lewis playing a character just like himself wasn't much of a stretch, and Mr. Lewis was spot on here. Pleasure to watch him do his thing, both when he's mugging and kidding around, but also when he's being more serious, trying to help his son break into show business successfully. No luck there.There are moments in this film, many of them, that are simply unforgettable. In particular, standouts are Lee Evans as Jack Parker, and the wonderful actors playing his father and uncle. All three men leap off the screen when they have the slightest chance, displaying talents rarely seen anywhere.And the still lovely Leslie Caron is a pleasure to watch on the screen, as she always was. (An American in Paris, Lili, Gigi, and many more.)Utterly unlike any move you've ever seen, many folks (including us) think this is a masterpiece, a genuine diamond in the rough. Just got an excellent copy on BluRay here at amazon, and enjoyed yet another viewing from start to finish.Note: This is a "dark comedy," with several very dark moments. Not for children, or the faint of heart.Enjoy this most unusual film. Highly recommended.
